NO. THERE IS NO VERSE IN THE BIBLE THAT TELLS YOU TO OBEY EVIL GOVERNMENT OR LAWS.

No. There is no verse in the Bible that tells you to obey evil government or laws. If we don’t realize that now, it will soon be too late. I want to prove to you beyond any doubt that the Bible tells us what we must do in the face of wicked government and laws.

First, I want to show you the weak and pathetic heresy that many believers have come to accept as truth. I want you to see the widespread excuse that is being used for submitting when we should disobey.

Here is an example.  Someone commented to me:

“Out of curiosity, how do you justify your argument against obeying the government when you read Romans 13:1-7. The government Paul was talking about was even more oppressive than anything we can imagine. You could truly be martyred for your faith under the Roman government. And, what was Paul’s response? Did he call for governmental reform? Did he call for us to protest the government? Did he demand his rights and call on the government to recognize his rights? None of the above, he said, in the face of a brutal government, to obey. He didn’t say obey if your rights are recognized, he said obey. The church of today has to realize that the government is not our arena as Christians. Never, in the history of the church, has God used the government to bring about change.”

This defense of submission to evil government is riddled with error and falsehoods. Here are my responses to selected quotes:

1.You could truly be martyred for your faith under the Roman government.” First the writer tells us to obey evil laws, but then mentions martyrs. They never would have been martyred had they not broken the law by being Christians.

2. Then he asks, “Did (Paul) call for governmental reform? Did he call for us to protest the government? Did he demand his rights and call on the government to recognize his rights? None of the above…” The truth is, Paul did all of the above. “Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out” (Acts 16:37).

3. And finally, the zinger—the heresy that has sidelined the Body of Christ in the hour when we are most needed: “The church of today has to realize that the government is not our arena as Christians. Never, in the history of the church, has God used the government to bring about change.” Totally untrue. William Wilberforce was a Christian who used his faith in Jesus to abolish slavery in England. In fact, believers throughout history have created child labor laws, health regulations, and have exposed injustice, and corruption. It is safe to say that Christians are more responsible for influencing government, bringing about reform by forcing laws to be changed, and standing up for justice, than any other group in history.

So how did this writer get it so wrong? By doing what so many do. Isolating one set of verses, taking them out of context, and arriving at a conclusion that looks holy, but is in fact, pure and simple fear.

Let’s look at the verses that have been violated:

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore, you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor (Romans 13:1-7).

It seems to say that we are to honor government in every form, right? Wrong. To demonstrate what Paul is saying I offer this example. Say some parents leave the house, and leave the oldest child in charge. The child is given strict instructions not to open the door for anyone, except for a postal messenger whom they are expecting to deliver an important package that day.

The parents tell the child, “He will have blonde hair. He is wearing blue jeans and a white shirt. Don’t let anyone else in.” So later, a man with black hair, a blue shirt, and black slacks knocks on the door claiming to be the messenger with the package. Do they let him in? Of course not.

Lost in all the quoting of this verse on submission to government is the most important part: The description of the ruling authority. The Bible tells us what they are wearing! Look at the description:

1.They are not a terror to good works. Any government that terrorizes the innocent is not of God. How can you say that Hitler was God’s will for Germany? Hitler and other tyrants are in fact the ones being warned that there were God appointed governments who would destroy them: “But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.”  That is why the just powers of the world rose up and destroyed the Nazis.

2. They praise good works. Authorities that are endorsed by God do not hate or oppose Christian activity. They are the ones who—even if they are not Christian themselves—do not insult soul winning or fight the work of God. They are the cops, teachers, politicians who are glad that children are getting out of gangs and off of drugs.

3. You must be subject for the sake of conscience. When it becomes tricky, is when government is a mixture of right and wrong. Jesus said of the Pharisees, “Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, but do not do” (Matthew 23:3).

Do what they say, but don’t partake of their hypocrisy. Watch them for that moment when they cross the line and come between you and your God.  Just as our conscience should drive us to obey the law, we should also know when our conscience tells us not to obey an evil law.

Here’s when Peter reached that tipping point, speaking to those very same Pharisees: “So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:18-20).

And again, in Acts 5:29, “Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.””

God not only does not endorse evil government: He will have no part in it. “Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death” (Psalm 94:20). There is your answer. A corrupt throne (government) cannot be allied with God.

The Amplified Bible (1974) puts it this way: “Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, one which frames and devises mischief by decree [under the sacred name of law]?”  How much clearer can it be than this?  It proves that laws can be evil and cannot be allied with God.

In fact, evil laws are the worst form of sin. They provide legitimacy to evil.  Matthew Henry said, “Iniquity is daring enough even when human laws are against it, which often prove too weak to give an effectual check to it; but how insolent, how mischievous, is it when it is backed by a law! Iniquity is not the better, but much the worse, for being enacted by law; nor will it excuse those that practice it to say that they did but do as they were bidden.”

Notice how at the end, Henry says we can’t use the excuse that we were just obeying the law.  That is why Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

The laws being created by Democrats, using the coronavirus as an excuse, are far worse than the virus itself because, unlike the virus, those new laws become permanent.  It is time for the church to wake up and take action, beginning with voting the evildoers out of office and quit calling our submission a godly thing, when it is just a cowardly thing.

“WHO WILL RISE UP FOR ME AGAINST THE EVILDOERS? WHO WILL STAND UP FOR ME AGAINST THE WORKERS OF INIQUITY?” (Psalm 94:16).

God calls evil king Nebuchadnezzar “My servant ” in Jeremiah 27:6. Yes, God raised up an evil government for a greater purpose– to chastize his own wayward people. A few verses later God warns that anyone who resists Nebuchadnezzar would be crushed(v.8). Then in v.9 God says those who were prophecying that God’s people would not be brought under submission to Nebuchadnezzar were prophesying lies.

      • mariomurilloministries

Nebuchadnezzar, The evil King as you say said this “To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth:
Peace be multiplied to you. 2 I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me.
3 How great are His signs,And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And His dominion is from generation to generation.” And there were times when Daniel did not obey him. When the King surrendered to God Daniel served him.

      • mariomurilloministries

Nebuchadnezzar, The evil King as you say said this Daniel 4:1 “To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth:
Peace be multiplied to you. 2 I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me.
3 How great are His signs,And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And His dominion is from generation to generation.” Daniel 4 And there were times when Daniel did not obey him. And in times when that king resembled the description in Romans 13 Daniel served him.

I agree with you 100%. The Church has been praying for An Awakening and Revival. The enemy did this I believe to try and stop it, which is ridiculous. God sees and laughs at satan’s plan, PSALMS 2.
I pray that Pastors come together
in Unity and open their Churhes sooner than later.
THE GATES OF HELL WILL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST THE CHURCH!

Thank you Sir and God Bless You.

Thank you so much for the article, Mario!!

I want to add one more thing that may be useful for even those Christians who are trying to “obey their government.”

The Law of the Land here in the United States is the Constitution. The First Amendment protects our “free exercise [of religion],” our “freedom of speech,” and “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.” Our elected officials, military, and police force all gave an oath to defend the Constitution against “all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC.”

Our family and church are operating under the true Law of the Land. Those who are NOT operating under the Law of the Land, and who are NOT defending these rights are THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT.

When acting in a group, it is certainly easier to ENTER a church for service; GATHER with others at the beach or in a home; WALK into a church or restaurant; OPEN a shop for people to VOLUNTARILY enter and browse!

But when we are bravest, we are doing these things even if we are alone.

The Constitution does NOT say we can assemble peaceably IF we wear a mask; IF we stand 6 feet away; IF we get a temperature check; IF we download a Contract Tracing app; IF we submit our contact information to a guard at the entrance to the store or church.

We need to call out the Criminal Element for what they are: Liars to the oath they gave to protect the Law of the Land. We the people will uphold it. (And everyone, children and adults alike, should memorize the First Amendment so we can offer it to those who also need bravery, or those who are too busy forgetting their oaths to bother remembering that “boring old” Constitution.)

Thank you for this article I wholly endorse it. As a pastor I refused to bow to the will of the world, and my own national leadership, and our church continued to function, as normal, throughout the shut down. The Word of God is the higher, indeed the only authority, on which we as believers must stand.

    • Karen

Geoffrey Gonifas—-Where is your church? I’ll come idf it is not too far. Looking for a church that is open.

Most excellent writing. I wrote an essay 10 years ago entitled “Render to the Constitution and to God.” I explain how verses Romans 13:1 & 5, 1 Peter 2:17, and Matthew 22:21 would be interpreted for us today in the US. http://davidwgray.com/Render-to-the-Constitution-and-to-God.htm

“Woe to those who legalize injustice and write oppressive legislation.” Isaiah 10:1. This article will DEMOLISH ignorance. It should be read by every Christian. Read Matthew 23 and see what Jesus thought about abusive authority. Read it out loud.

    • Carolina

      Revealing article Mario!
Well, let’s demolish some ignorance here today!…
There is an insidious law that right now is being considered on the congressional floor.
The T.R.A.C.E. act, the number for the legislative bill on the Congressional docket is H. R. 6666. Within this laws description lies the intrinsic pattern for extreme governmental overreach and abuse to citizens.
This act is supposed to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. But it is also a HUGE “caution”? sign revealing just how invasive the Federal government can become at such a time as this.
I read the bill entirely and suggest to EVERYONE who is a core remnant follower of Jesus Christ, to read it also.
It is a very disturbing bill they are motivated to pass. Coronavirus tracing poses a serious treat to our privacy as Americans. And they’re already using the TRACING pattern (from within the bill) at large among the American public to track down people who, “might have been exposed to the virus”.
As for me and my house WE will serve The Lord.
Right is right, wrong is wrong, and we MUST be enabled by Holy Spirit to discern the difference.
My Husband illuminated my mind, saying isn’t it interesting that Christ told us through Apostle John about this timing?
      When writing to the church of Philadelphia it says;
“Because you have kept my command to endure, I will keep you from the hour of testing that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. I am coming quickly. Hold onto what you have, so that no one takes your crown”.
      (Revelation 3:10, 11)
The word “test” in this context and a near future vaccine for COVID-19 with H. R. 6666 could be synonymous with each other.?
      Just saying, could it be???‍♀️

      • Noel

        Good point, Carolina.

I believe the current wicked indoctrination is preparing the rebellious worldwide to receive the ultimate man of sin. We must stand for the Truth when the laws of rebellious men violate the laws of God. I do not want to be here when the man of lawlessness comes on the scene! As Jesus said, “Be watchful at every time, begging that you be counted worthy to escape all these things which are about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.” I am seeking humility and a very sober mind for the rest of whatever days He gives me.

      • megagenius

Shouldn’t that H.R. 6666 Bill be called H.R. Sick Sick Sick Sick Bill? This Bill is embedded with Witchcraft: Manipulate, Intimidate, in order to Dominate.

    Dear Church,

The Lord, who is strong and mighty.
The Lord, who is mighty in battle.
    Open wide, you gates.
    Open wide, you ancient doors.
Then the King of glory will come in.”
    (Psalm 24:7-9)

  9. Ammi

Ok. I understand about us not “obeying evil”, but I have a question about who raises authority. I’ve always believed that God raises and takes down. There are a few, but one common. The Israelites were repeatedly warned against their idolatry. They did not listen. So the decree came for captivity. They wanted them to fight against Babylon, but then were warned, hey, it’s too late, you didn’t heed the warning. They were told to submit.
Same thing in the Exodus. Same thing in the Garden of Gethsemane….Peter pulled his sword, Yeshua told him put it back…
If we are truly in the end times, no matter how much protesting we do, what will be, will be. We can be against/not believe in a thing – we can even voice our protests…..but, just like the exodus and crucifixion long ago, what seems to be our disadvantage, will ultimately turn to our salvation.

Sounds like the writer would have us agree on abortion (sacrafice of children) and marriage between a man and a man or woman and a woman. If we speak or teach the word of God, how do you not go against the God Ordained Authority with just these two examples?

Thanks Mario (God Ordained Minister of the “Lord Most High”, THE MOST HIGH AUTHORITY) for opening my mind about this.

  12. fredsheltonministries

Thank you Mario, this is an excellent read.
Jesus did not subject himself to the Pharisees, Saducees, doctors of the law, or the Roman government for that matter. He did what was right in the sight of God, if it conflicted with the laws of man, and it often did, he offered no apology. Paul warned us to beware of false brethren crept in unaware…in his day, they were trying to bring Christians under the law. Today, in addition to trying to impose law, they try to discourage the body from fighting back by using perversions of the scripture, defeatist sayings, or rapture theories that sap the strength and resolve from the Body of Christ. We as the Church are supposed to be standing with our shield of faith up and our sword held high. Never do real Christians lay down their sword. The description of them is very telling: they loved not their lives to the death. These are not people who surrendered to the world, these are those who surrendered to the Spirit and did great exploits.

I studied the Constitution and it’s creation by our founders which led me to take a look at the Bible because the evidence I found shows that our founders were all familiar with it and most were practicing Christians. They wrote and argued for inclusion of Biblical principles and exclusion of things that were counter to those principles. Please remember the rally cry “No King but Jesus” used during the Revolutionary War. To that end the Constitution puts no ability to govern the lives or religious though of the people in any way by any of our government officials or law makers. The first amendment is testament to this principle as it regards freedom of Religion and Speech and press. None of the Government is over the people, it was designed to protect the people from those that might harm them and especially governments and businesses, foreign and domestic, that might raise up to take unfair advantage of them or harm the viability of American enterprises. We have no business doing the work of the devil nor following his orders for any purpose regardless where the order comes from. Stay with the word of Jesus and you can’t go wrong but remember the people that follow Jesus are not promised they won’t suffer for it. Those who bend their knee to the evil one will suffer much more in the long run. Stay the course.

  15. kingskid48

I have no idea what a, “Rapture theory that saps the strength and resolved from the Body of Christ”, is supposed to be. I have believed in, been aware that there is going to be, a Rapture, almost all my life, with no apologies whatsover. We are the ones who are the most evangelical, aware of the need to win souls, The Doctrine of Imminency needs to return to the Church, now. Telling people that the Church is going to turn things around and create a wonderful here on earth and then turn it all over to Jesus when He returns, is flat-out deception. All that said, I am glad to see that people are waking up to the danger of HR6666. The potential for abuse in this bill is staggering. It’s being presented as just a nice benign little piece of legislation to keep us, “safe”, from the virus. If anyone seriously thinks they will not use this as a precursor, a test balloon, to lead up to taking children away from from parents who homeschool and parents who are teaching their children the Bible, there are bridges you may be interested in purchasing. This bill was written by a man who calls himself a “pastor”. No wonder Jesus told us over and over, “See that ye be not deceived”.

    • kingskid48

Sorry for the type-0. That should read, “wonderful utopia”.

    • Noel

I agree kingskid48. I also have no idea what “rapture theories that sap the strength and resolve from the body of Christ” are. The return of Christ for His church is one of the greatest sources of strength and comfort to me, especially during these times when lawlessness abounds. Scripture is clear that the anti-christ system will be given authority to conquer the saints who are left on the earth during a 42 month period. “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast- all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. He who has an ear, let him hear. If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. ” Revelation 13:5-10

I will fight the enemy with all the weapons that our victorious Lord provides, but when that final shofar sounds, I am outta here!! I Corinthians 15:51-58

I have always believed that Paul did not want to get all the Christians killed by opposing Nero in a forthright way.  To a great degree they laid down like sheep in a slaughter…..BUT….we live in a constitutional Republic  ( I think it still is )…It is our duty to uphold our rights through the constitution.  WE need someone today that will operate like MLK Jr and will contact all the Pastors and get them to mobilize for social disobedience.  Peaceful demonstrations to raise awareness is the way to go.  What if all the churches had their congregations show up Sunday ?  What could the government do ?  They can’t arrest us all.

    Just 2 comments:

    1. It is critical to discern that our enemy is the spiritual forces of darkness and not people or political. We have to love people and our enemies. The devils strategy is to bring division, strife and the like. If we operate in the flesh we are playing into his hands.
    2. We must recognise the anointing and separate the anointing from the individual. The government has Gods anointing and we must obey them in all things as far as it does not contravene the Word of God. Daniel is a good example of this. He was thrown into the lions den by a vain king who wanted to be worshipped. Daniel stayed true to God, but still served the king better than all the other ministers. Because he had a different hart/spirit. His honour and respect for the king and devotion to God, brought the vain king to repentance.
Repentance however starts with each one of us. We have to change our own ways. If everyone of us lived as we should as Christians, the country would not be in this situation.

    • Annette Hughes

Spiritual forces of darkness influence but the physical counterparts carry out the acts! Love people and our enemies fine but lets not leave out praying for divine justice to be brought against them along with a path to salvation. And if everyone of us lived as Christians we would still be in this mess because of evil! Christ was perfect but that did not stop evil.
