STOLEN THUNDER

by | Mar 2, 2018 | Christianity Today | 27 comments

They are saying what we should be saying.  Millions have seen their videos.  They are credited for starting a revolution of thought in North America.  Here’s the rub: they are stealing our thunder.  They are putting preachers to shame.  They are Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro.

You may be the last human in America who hasn’t seen their confrontations and then eliminations of post-modern secularists.  They tackle every hot button issue from transgender, abortion, gun rights, feminism…in short, everything your pastor may be afraid to preach on.

Here’s the thing—they do it with an aplomb that devastates their opponents.  They produce clear facts and irresistible common sense to show how ancient morality is key to sanity.  In other words, they are doing our job.

There is one audience that is especially resonates with Jordan Petersen: young men.  This is a key demographic that the church has almost entirely lost.

Ben Shapiro destroys the case for abortion in take-no-prisoners style on the most liberal college campuses.

Jordan Petersen champions free speech in a way that you are not hearing in any pulpit today.

What they are, is what preaching used to be in America.  What they have done, is destroy our great excuse: the lie that young audiences do not want to hear classic morality. And they have destroyed the sister lie that if you take on the false arguments of the left you will be shot down in flames.

The fact that they don’t preach the Gospel or refer to that many Bible verses only increases our embarrassment.  That’s because, they are still closer to the counsel of God than most celebrity pastors.

While most mega church pastors seek the non-offensive sermon, these two wade into the fallacies of sin and atheism.  They prove that there is a vast young audience for moral absolutes.

They prove what I have long declared: it is time for sermons with content.  Paul said he did not come with the excellency of man’s wisdom but the demonstration of the power of God.  That does not mean he was not compelling.  We are not compelling because we are so afraid of telling people where they are wrong.

There was a day when a Jordan Petersen and a Ben Shapiro would not have been such a novelty.  We used to have preachers who were anointed with content that exposed the bankruptcy of secular culture.

Billy Graham was such a preacher.  He stood unapologetically before lost souls, of all races, and educational levels, and declared the Word of God.  He left nothing out.

The notion that he was a simple preacher is misleading.  He once said, “the new morality is nothing but the old immorality.” A simple yet profound observation that is more at home in a meeting with Jordan and Ben than our present churches.

Billy  seized headlines, current events and never shied away from explaining why sin destroyed and Jesus offered peace that passes understanding.

Today the church is talking to itself because it does not know how to talk to modern minds.  We do not change hearts and minds.  We are not adding daily to the church such as should be saved.

You know I believe in miracles.  However, those who continually offer the world emotional experiences are missing the great power of preaching like Jesus promised, “I will give you a mouth and wisdom that your adversaries will not be able to gainsay or resist.”

On the other hand, those who leave out the power of the gifts of the Spirit—that are a sign to the unbeliever—are equally crippling the Church’s power to transform lost souls.

This dynamic duo of gifts of power with piercing preaching was embodied by Paul the Apostle.  Until Paul, the church was led by Peter.  Peter had fire but not the trained mind of Paul the Apostle.

When Paul told the initiative his dual gifting of heat and light caused the Gospel to spread to all the known world.  It can be that way again.

It is not enough to tell harmless stories to the already converted.  We need to penetrate those who never darken the door of a church.  It is not enough to dazzle them with logic as Jordan and Ben do.  They need both a convicting declaration and the confirming signs of the Holy Spirit.

Jordan and Ben have done the heavy lifting.  They proved our shallow sermons are unjustified.

Maybe we needed to be shamed into action by two men who have proven that millions—many who we thought wanted nothing to do with Christ—are hungry for truth.

      His Storm is coming! ???

At the head of it will be tangeable grace that leads repentance. This is something that folks like Peterson, Shiparo and even Milo need to see from us, in spades.

The Storm IS coming, because He is sending it! Lets not miss this glorious bus!

Both of these men need to be prayed into the kingdom now!!! Imagine the fire if the Holy Spirit under them!!!

I agree !! Thank you for speaking the truth . The knowledge of the truth sets men and women free . I’ve seen Ben in action , and I pray the church will become now , a truth beacon , not in just a few but in thousands in Jesus name!

We need to pray for the salvation of people like Ben Shapiro, as he is in need of
Jesus Christ, just as all men are. Being Jewish does not save anyone, only believing
      in Jesus Christ saves anyone.

    Big amen preach it Brother

I am totoally amazed when I hear Ben. He takes an issue and confidently tears it apart piece by piece and leaves the liberal audience speechless unable to refute the matter. Mordecai told Esther “For if you keep silent at this time relief and deliverance shall arise for the Jews elsewhere”….Esther 4:14

Preach the Word of God and Him glorified! ?

IMO both of these men are God anointed to speak to the very audiences that they draw, for such a time as this. Christian ministers (no matter how passionately articulate) reach primarily the already converted, inside the church walls, and that is not likely to change anytime soon. I thank God for Shapiro and Peterson, who are a voice for The Great Awakening that even now is on the horizon. They convince many to embark on that journey of enlightenment, which will lead them to the One who is the light of the world.

Mario, you are right on as usual. Now, I am wondering what the new tax law is going to do to the churches. With the standard deduction being doubled, will tax-deductible contributions even be a factor any more, since the standard deduction will exceed most peoples’ projected Schedule A deductions? Will churches decide to revoke their 501 (c)(3) status so that they can throw off the government’s muzzle? At this point it’s hard to tell. But I just donated a bunch of stuff to a thrift store and didn’t even ask for a receipt. It’s not worth the hassle to itemize it.

I knew a couple that lived in deseet hot springs that gave what biblicaly would be concidered average in comparison to there income but rhe irs audited them when they tried to claim it on there taxes.
The irs said they were flagged because there giving seemed extravagant for there demgraphic.
I decided not to claim giving on my taxes before that for my own convictions but that scarred me off for sure.

All the Billy Graham memorial/funeral procedings being broadcast on secular tv around the world,so awsome!!
I and my wife were in tears

Once again, you nailed it! I follow Ben Shapiro (suggested by Lance Wallnau) & he is amazing for his age. God will use whoever will open their mouths & Ben is doing it. Canada needs someone like Ben. The back of political correctness needs to be broken off North America & it sad when churches have bought that lie. Thank you Mario for standing for righteousness!

Absolutely True Mario..Its is Sad & Shameful..But if the Church isn’t stepping up and stepping out, God will use others..It is not a coincidence, but an Intentional Divine Move by the Lord to Raise Up and Equip Men or Women for Such a Time as This..Meantime the Church is starting to Wake Up, But has a Long Ways to Go..There is a Great Movement Going On In the Heavens and Here On Earth.. A Great Awakening and Paradigm Shifting taking Place. The Election Of Donald J. Trump in the Midst of Unbelief, Corruption, Sabotage and Hatred, was just the beginning to Reveal the Foolishness of Man’s Agendas, Corruption and Deception in Our God Blessed Nation.

It’s true that pastors primarily preach and shepherd those in the church already — which is what pastors should be doing. What’s striking is that God has chosen these two men, Ben a Jew and Jordan a Christian from a secular academic background, as evangelists. It’s easy to criticize the church, but instead let’s join in the flow of what God is obviously doing by doing our best to find God’s unique assignment for each of us and excelling at that. Neither Ben nor Jordan can do what God has assign you and I to do. Let’s do thing thing God has given us to do — just like Ben and Jordan have.

    • mariomurilloministries

Mike, I want to respectfully respond to your comment. Ben and Jordan are not evangelists. If they were, they would be inviting their audiences to receive Christ. They are more like the teacher Gamaliel in the book of Acts, who while not a believer, respected the faith. Pastors should all be soul winners not just teachers. That is why Paul exhorted Timothy—the pastor of the Ephesian church—to do the work of an evangelist. Aimee McPherson said, “any preacher who gives a sermon and does not ask souls to come to Christ is a failure.”

Can’t afford to lose that tax exempt status, never realizing that the Founders made that a rule that churches are ALREADY tax exempt. Thanks to FDR who wanted the churches to stop preaching against some of his plans.

Democrats… Always looking for ways to shut the church up.

Lets not forget either American public education that had been run by leftists since its inception. It was ALWAYS meant to dumb down the populace and by yimminey, it’s done a great job. Pulpits full of folks who barely know history, let alone the Constitution.

Then there are the seminaries, where everyone who graduates is a “pastor” REGARDLESS of their actual calling, indoctrinated in THAT schools doctrine, generally without any notion of the power of God, HIS leading, HIS anointing, HIS power, HIS voice…. After all, church is a business.

Is it any wonder this country is the way it is.

  12. GAIL WILLIAMS

STOP ANALYZING……….GET UP AND GO INTO THE STREETS AND EVANGELIZE………TELL PEOPLE ABOUT SALVATION …..TELL THEM JESUS LOVES THEM .WALK THE TALK…EVERYONE CAN SAY SOMETHING……ITS NOT ABOUT SUNDAY SERVICE……ITS ABOUT JESUS ….GO OUT AND GET THE LOST…..TELL THEM……JUST DO IT…….WE NEED LABORERS OUT THERE……PRAY GOD RAISES UP LABORERS…IN JESUS NAME……I CAN TELL YOU THE PROSTITUTES………DRUG ADDICTS……….THIEVES…..ETC DO NOT ATTEND CHURCH SERVICES ON SUNDAY……WE HAVE TO GO OUT AND TELL THEM…AMEN

    • Jeannie

      yes….

I’ve always said. “Door to door witnesses are the dirty laundry of the church.” This article adds another element to that statement! Ouch!

Here is a link to an amazing woman with the gift of oratory who stands boldly against the Leftist gay agenda in our schools. You’ll like it! If I stood up in front of the school board I would blubber all over the place, but this lady can deliver the perfect punch. While I’m nothing like this lady, Shapiro or Peterson, I can support the cause in other ways and will continue to do so. It’s just cool that there are those with amazing gifts, much like yourself.

Pastor Murillo, I have listened to both these men speak out on truths that I agree should be coming from the pulpit. I find myself lamenting that while the truths the speak of are still truth that we need, how much more powerful if the the truth of God’s word was also declared by these men. nonteheless, I’m glad that we have conservative thinkers out there not afraid to speak the truth! God Bless you Pastor Murillo!
